Founded by Martha Yunker more than fifteen years ago, YA Architecture has grown into a truly collaborative design-focused architectural firm. YA is a group of well-rounded architects and designers with substantial artistic and construction backgrounds. The work we create is in direct response to the singular nature of each and every client.
Martha Yunker is Principal and founder of YA. She received a Bachelor of Arts at Stanford University and a Bachelor of Architecture with Distinction at the University of Minnesota. She has nearly 30 years of comprehensive experience in programming, planning and design with an emphasis on client relationships. She has built a solid reputation by nurturing these relationships to ensure each client becomes an integral part of an inclusive design process. Her attention to detail, particularly in the firm’s residential work, has set a high standard for all of our projects.

Rehn Hassell, a Project Architect and Senior Associate with YA, holds a Bachelor of Architecture from the University of Minnesota. He has experience in planning, design and construction of golf clubhouses, private residences and a variety of commercial retail projects. Rehn has developed a reputation over more than 17 years of working well with clients and design committees from the programming stage through project completion. His project management style follows the use of his considerable design skills and talents in an efficient yet interactive and inclusive manner. The result of this process produces beautiful projects in a timely and cost effective fashion.

Michael Burgoyne is a Project Architect and Associate with YA. He received a Bachelor of Architecture Cum Laude at Notre Dame University and a Master of Architecture Cum Laude at the Southern California Institute of Architecture (SCI-Arc) in Los Angeles. In addition to over 16 years of experience in architectural design and construction management, he also has owned and operated a furniture design and fabrication company. He also spends time mentoring elementary and high school students in the arts through the Minneapolis Institute of Arts and local public and private schools. Michael has successfully coordinated with residential and commercial contractors, artists and fabricators. He develops a strong rapport with both owners and construction teams, making projects run smoothly for clients.

Anthony Scott is a Project Designer and Associate with YA. He holds a Bachelor of Science in Architecture from Pennsylvania State University and a Master of Architecture from The University of Virginia. Anthony has dedicated his nearly twenty-five years in architecture to the design of private residences. His vast experience in both traditional and modernist modes of design enables him to offer variety and timelessness to YA projects. He is particularly skilled in creating artful solutions to architectural details. A skilled educator, he taught Architectural Design at the University of Minnesota College of Design as an Adjunct Faculty member. He also mentors and teaches design to elementary and middle school students at Ramalynn Montessori Academy. Anthony’s association with YA began in 1991; however, he returns this year after 7 years of independent consulting and teaching. His residential work has been published in national and international magazines.

Susanne Dehnhard Carpenter is the Business Manager and Promotion Director of YA. She studied architecture and vocal performance at the University of Minnesota with independent study in Berlin, and has completed the Harvard Design School executive education seminar on Financial Management for Design Firms. Her wide-ranging responsibilities include advertising, personnel, financial management & planning and general office management. With over 20 years experience in small business, she brings a broad knowledge base to her work at YA. Susanne serves on the Board of Directors for the St. Anthony Community Theater (SACT) and has volunteered in both the Minneapolis and St. Anthony school districts on leadership teams and as director of theatrical set design and construction.

Aimie Dukes is the Office Manager at YA. With an Associate for Applied Science degree in Interior Design from The Art Institutes International Minnesota, she has a strong interest in design, which gives her a unique understanding of the architectural process. In addition to administrative duties, her responsibilities include maintaining the YA website, resource library and photo archives. Her excellent organizational and time management skills help maintain a creative and professional office environment.
